Horyuji Temple
The oldest wooden buildings in the world
are found at the Horyuji, near Nara.
They were built in 670 to replace an earlier
temple erected by Prince Shotoku that was
destroyed by fire. At one time, the Tamamushi
shrine was decorated entirely with the
iridescent wings of beetles.
